A starter’s gear list is something that should be pretty obvious after reading this thread. Hopefully you understand what stats you need and that leather vs. cloth doesn’t matter. Armed with this information, you should be able to make good choices for yourself. Even with the homogenization of gear, determining balance gear from resto gear is still fairly simple. However, there may be some “resto” gear that is an upgrade in which case take it if you can. I recommend an addon called Ratings Buster which will break down the ratings into percentages and help you determine what item is an upgrade.

Recently, Pippilongear put together a pre-raid list of gear for those that still are looking for help. Please notice that this is pre-naxx gear only, so all of this comes from emblems/heroics.

Badeggplant did the hard work for you moonkins that are deep in raids or have no more upgrades to be obtained pre naxx and put together a top 5 best in slot list for each respective slot. Understand that some of the best in slot stuff is cloth gear and you will need to sit down and have the discussion with your guild on rolling on cloth items:
